How to Use the Grade Calculator

Enter the grades you have received for your assignments, tests, quizzes, or exams.

For a simple points-based calculation, enter:

Points earned
Total points possible

For a weighted course, enter each assignment or category’s percentage weight.

The calculator then determines your overall grade.

How to Calculate Your Grade

There are two common ways schools and instructors calculate grades.

Points-Based Grading

If every assignment is based on points, use:

Grade Percentage = (Points Earned Ć· Points Possible) Ɨ 100

For example, if you earned 87 points out of 100:

87 Ć· 100 Ɨ 100 = 87%

Your grade is:

87%

If you earned 420 points out of 500:

420 Ć· 500 Ɨ 100 = 84%

Your grade is:

84%

Weighted Grading

Some courses assign different weights to different categories.

For example:

Category Grade Weight
Homework 90% 20%
Quizzes 85% 20%
Tests 80% 35%
Final Exam 92% 25%

The weighted grade is calculated by multiplying each category grade by its weight and adding the results.

(90 Ɨ 0.20) + (85 Ɨ 0.20) + (80 Ɨ 0.35) + (92 Ɨ 0.25)

= 17.0 + 17.0 + 28.0 + 23.0

= 85%

Your weighted course grade would therefore be approximately:

85%

Grade Calculator Formula

For a simple points-based course:

Grade % = Points Earned Ć· Total Points Possible Ɨ 100

For a weighted course:

Overall Grade = Ī£ (Category Grade Ɨ Category Weight)

Weights should be expressed as decimals when calculating.

For example:

20% = 0.20
30% = 0.30
50% = 0.50

The total category weights should equal 100%.

How to Calculate Your Current Grade

Suppose your course currently includes:

Homework: 95%
Quiz: 88%
Test: 82%

If these are all worth the same amount, you can calculate the simple average:

(95 + 88 + 82) Ć· 3 = 88.33%

Your current grade would be approximately:

88.3%

However, if the assignments have different weights, you should use a weighted average instead of simply averaging the percentages.

How to Calculate the Grade You Need on a Final

You can also use a grade calculator to determine the score required on a final exam.

Suppose:

Current grade = 85%
Current coursework weight = 80%
Final exam weight = 20%
Target final grade = 90%

The calculation is:

(85 Ɨ 0.80) + (Final Exam Ɨ 0.20) = 90

First:

85 Ɨ 0.80 = 68

Then:

68 + (Final Exam Ɨ 0.20) = 90

So:

Final Exam Ɨ 0.20 = 22

Final Exam = 110%

In this example, a 90% overall grade would not be mathematically possible with only a 20%-weighted final because the required final score would exceed 100%.

This is one reason a target-grade calculator can be useful before an exam.

Example Grade Calculations
Example 1: Simple Assignment Grade

You score:

45/50

Calculation:

45 Ć· 50 Ɨ 100 = 90%

Grade:

90%

Example 2: Multiple Assignments

Suppose you have:

18/20
42/50
27/30
85/100

Total earned:

18 + 42 + 27 + 85 = 172

Total possible:

20 + 50 + 30 + 100 = 200

Overall percentage:

172 Ć· 200 Ɨ 100 = 86%

Your overall grade is:

86%

Notice that this method considers the points possible for each assignment instead of treating every percentage as equally important.

Percentage to Letter Grade

Letter-grade boundaries vary by school, instructor, course, and institution. A commonly used US grading scale is:

Percentage Common Letter Grade
90–100% A
80–89% B
70–79% C
60–69% D
Below 60% F

Some schools use plus/minus grading, such as Aāˆ’, B+, or Cāˆ’, and their exact boundaries can differ.

For the most accurate letter grade, use the grading scale provided by your instructor or school.

Common Grade Calculation Mistakes
Averaging Percentages Instead of Points

If assignments have different point values, simply averaging their percentages can produce an inaccurate overall grade.

Ignoring Assignment Weights

A final exam worth 30% of your course should have a much greater impact than a homework assignment worth 2%.

Using the Wrong Current Grade

When calculating a target final grade, make sure you know whether your current percentage represents only completed coursework or already includes anticipated grades.

Assuming Every School Uses the Same Letter Scale

Grading policies vary. Your instructor’s grading scale should take priority over a generic percentage-to-letter conversion.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Grade Calculator?

A Grade Calculator is an online tool that calculates a student’s course grade from assignment scores, points, percentages, or weighted categories.

How do I calculate my grade?

For points-based grading, divide your total points earned by the total points possible and multiply by 100.

Grade = Points Earned Ć· Points Possible Ɨ 100

How do I calculate a weighted grade?

Multiply each category’s grade by its weight and add the weighted values together.

Weighted Grade = Ī£(Grade Ɨ Weight)

What is my grade if I get 90 out of 100?

Your grade is 90%.

Can I calculate my grade using multiple assignments?

Yes. Add all points earned and divide by the total points possible when the course uses a points-based system.

Can a Grade Calculator handle weighted assignments?

Yes, if the calculator supports weighted grading. Enter each grade together with its corresponding weight.

How do I calculate my current class grade?

Use the grades for completed work and apply your course’s grading method. If all assignments use points, divide total points earned by total points possible. If categories have weights, calculate the weighted average.

How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?

You need your current grade, the percentage weight of the final, and your target overall grade. The required final score can then be solved using the weighted-grade formula.

Is a 90% an A?

In many US grading systems, 90% is an A, but grading scales vary by school and instructor.

What is the difference between a grade calculator and a GPA calculator?

A grade calculator determines a course or assignment percentage, while a GPA calculator converts course grades into a grade-point average using a particular GPA scale.

Can I use this calculator for college grades?

Yes. The calculator can be used for high school, college, university, or other courses as long as you know how your instructor calculates grades.

Why is my calculated grade different from my teacher’s grade?

Your instructor may use weighted categories, dropped assignments, extra credit, rounding rules, participation points, or another grading policy that differs from a simple points calculation.
