How AP Chemistry Is Scored
AP Chemistry has two sections with equal weighting.

The raw points from the two sections should not simply be added together and treated as a percentage because the sections have different raw-point totals but equal exam weighting.
Multiple-Choice Section
The AP Chemistry multiple-choice section contains 60 questions and represents 50% of the final AP score.
For example, if you answer:
45 out of 60 correctly
your raw MCQ percentage is:
45 ÷ 60 × 100 = 75%
Because the section is worth 50% of the exam:
75% × 0.50 = 37.5 weighted points
Your estimated multiple-choice contribution is therefore:
37.5 / 50
Free-Response Section
The free-response section contains 7 questions and represents 50% of the AP Chemistry score.

Example AP Chemistry Score Calculation
Suppose you scored:
MCQ: 45/60
FRQ: 36/46
Step 1: Calculate MCQ Contribution
45 ÷ 60 × 50 = 37.5
Step 2: Calculate FRQ Contribution
36 ÷ 46 × 50 ≈ 39.13
Step 3: Calculate Composite
37.5 + 39.13 = 76.63
Your estimated composite is approximately:
76.6 / 100
The calculator can then map that composite to an estimated AP score from 1–5 using its selected scoring model.
The composite-to-AP-score conversion should be clearly labeled as an estimate because College Board does not publish a permanent raw-score cutoff table. College Board states that AP composite scores are translated to the 1–5 scale using statistical processes.
